42Q Launches Rapid eDHR Cloud Solution for Medical Device Manufacturers

SAN JOSE, CALIF.— May 8, 201842Q, a leading provider of cloud manufacturing software, today announced the release of Rapid eDHR, a solution that enables medical device manufacturers to quickly implement all electronic device history records (eDHR) in as little as three weeks. Leveraging 42Q’s secure cloud MES (Manufacturing Execution System) platform, medical executives using Rapid eDHR have instant online access to hyperlinked component traceability data and other quality records, enabling them to quickly respond to potential issues and optimize processes for improved compliance.

Complex medical instruments including diagnostic imaging equipment and blood analyzers, along with high-risk medical devices like implanted pacemakers and defibrillators, are manufactured with comprehensive quality systems compliant with CGMP (current good manufacturing practices) requirements, found in 21 CFR part 820 of the FDA’s quality system regulation. The FDA audits manufacturing facilities that produce finished medical devices. During an FDA audit, the ability to produce correct, clear and verifiable quality records in a timely manner is essential. Rapid eDHR provides instant online access to medical device history records. This capability can be implemented quickly and is an important first step to rolling out an MES solution that provides the structure for, and ensures compliance with key elements of the FDA QSR (Quality Systems Regulation).

The 42Q Rapid eDHR cloud solution can electronically track and maintain extensive documentation and quality records pertaining to the production of finished medical devices. To date, some medical device manufacturers have been reluctant to transition from paper-based DHR processes to the electronic acquisition and storage of records, due to the complexity and time required to roll out on-premise eDHR systems.

Key benefits of the 42Q Rapid eDHR solution include:

  • Fast, simplified implementation. Because it is cloud based, Rapid eDHR can be rolled out in as little as three weeks and isn’t dependent on complicated integration with legacy software platforms.
  • Instant visibility for improved compliance. Manufacturing executives and other personnel can instantly retrieve production data including component traceability data, test data and other quality records – from mobile or desktop computers at any location.
  • Built-in certifications and regulatory compliance. Rapid eDHR digitally records quality records in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GAMP5) guidelines set forth by the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE). 42Q and Rapid eDHR are also used today in facilities producing class 2 and class 3 medical devices with UDI (universal device identifier) labeling.

“The simplicity of deploying Rapid eDHR is a radical departure from the complicated, on premise manufacturing execution systems of the past. It can help medical manufacturers transform compliance management,” said Srivats Ramaswami, CTO at 42Q.  “Our medical customers say that having real time access to critical quality records during FDA and notified body audits also inspires a sense of confidence from auditors in a company’s overall quality system.”

Rapid eDHR functionality includes:

  • Material verification and tracking, including traceability functions
  • Employee verification and tracking
  • Forced process routings
  • Online work instructions
  • Complete device history and genealogy

Tuning into Success – Tyndall and Sanmina Partner to Develop Sub-GHz Wearable Health Monitoring Platform

January 10, 2018 — Tyndall and Sanmina Corporation have announced a research collaboration, which will focus on the development of a novel wireless technology for a commercial wrist-worn health-monitoring platform. This platform will wirelessly monitor heart rate and arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2). Led by the Wireless Sensors Network (WSN) group at Tyndall, the objective of this research partnership is to improve the performance of these wearable platforms by providing more energy efficient wireless communications when compared with existing technology. The project is being funded by Enterprise Ireland through their Innovation Partnership Programme.

At present, Bluetooth wireless technology is in widespread use for short-range wireless sensing applications. It operates in the 2.4 GHz frequency band. However, at these frequencies, the human body has a significant effect on antenna performance, signal reliability and communications range.

As part of the collaboration, Tyndall will develop a sub-GHz wireless solution that has significant benefits for wearable sensing applications when compared with existing 2.4 GHz solutions. These benefits include the use of lower power radio technology that leads to increased battery lifetime; the provision of additional communication channels to mitigate current 2.45 GHz saturation in hospital environments; decreased signal loss due to the human body; and increased immunity from radio frequency interference.

Patients are set to benefit from the provision of longer-term, continuous health monitoring due to low power operation, which increases the chances of early detection for critical conditions and diseases.

Carlo Webster from Tyndall’s Commercial team comments: “The 915MHz band with integrated antenna is targeting a significant improvement to current Bluetooth protocols which currently operate at 2.4GHz.  This band is primarily absorbed by the human body thus depleting battery life because of the human environment. This new RF approach along with some patented technology by Sanmina Corporation may lead to opportunities to integrate the technology into their respective customers’ wearable systems, thus enabling longer battery life for future wearable systems.”

Dr. John Buckley, Head of the Radio-Frequency Circuits and Systems Team in Tyndall’s WSN Group explains: “The solution that we will develop with Sanmina aims to significantly improve the performance of current wireless sensor technology and enable ultra-low power operation using sub-GHz frequencies. In particular, the goal is to develop a novel sub-GHz antenna design with high immunity to human body effects and combine this with state-of-the-art, low-power radio transceiver technology. This will enable improved reliability of wireless communications and increased battery lifetime that will in turn open up new opportunities in application areas such as personalized medicine and health and wellness applications”.

Robert Newberry, Director of Engineering, at Sanmina Corporation welcomes their partnership with Tyndall commenting: “Sanmina chose to partner with Tyndall’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for Health, considering two main criteria: First was their ability to solve real-life problems through excellence in the application of science and technology, secondly via their broad industrial outreach programs. Our goal with this innovation partnership is to jointly develop a wearable platform, which can be further extended into both industrial and medical applications in the hope of stream-lining time to market for future wearable solutions. The partnership builds upon the existing collaboration which sees Sanmina combining access to Tyndall’s €200 million of Research and Development (ICT) infrastructure, 500 scientist, engineers and support staff with Sanmina’s global reach and expertise in manufacturing. The collaboration will see both parties leveraging this expertise to co-develop new technology solutions for their respective client-base”

Mr. Gary Dunlop, Global Project Manager, Sanmina Corporation, Mr. Robert Newberry, Director of Engineering,Sanmina Corporation, and Dr. John Buckley, Head of the Radio-Frequency Circuits and Systems Team, WSNGroup, Tyndall.

Sanmina Corporation Surpasses 25,000 Pieces of Manufacturing Equipment Connected in the Cloud

San Jose, Calif. – September 21, 201742Q, a leading provider of cloud manufacturing execution systems (MES), today announced that Sanmina Corporation has reached the milestone of connecting more than 25,000 pieces of manufacturing equipment to the 42Q cloud solution. Sanmina Corporation uses 42Q for real-time manufacturing visibility, process and quality control across their operations and as the backbone for “instant IOT” (Internet of Things) and manufacturing automation initiatives. The organization currently has 42Q deployed in more than 50 factories in 15 countries worldwide, including full integration with highly complex surface mount production (SMT) and “lights out” fully automated production lines.

“Sanmina developed and used an advanced on-premise MES for many years, but this system had high hardware and maintenance costs. They needed a solution to connect all of their facilities and equipment for management and control in real time,” said Srivats Ramaswami, CTO, 42Q. “The company made a strategic decision to adopt a cloud based MES that can be used by Sanmina and its customers. With 42Q, Sanmina now has real-time factory and supply chain visibility, providing executives with the data they need to make smart decisions.”

Industry 4.0 and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) initiatives are central to digital factory transformation and provide a framework for linking production, automation and analytics. The convergence of low-cost storage and sensors, powerful artificial intelligence and analytics, widespread adoption of Software as a Service (SaaS) and the cloud, promises an intelligent interaction of the real and virtual worlds – with huge impact for global supply chains and manufacturing. However, many are asking if these initiatives are real, gaining traction, or just hype. Furthermore, people often ask what the value or ROI (return on investment ) is of these initiatives, and if they are being embraced and advanced by leading companies. The results achieved with more than 25,000 pieces of equipment connected to the cloud is proof that the combination of the cloud, IIoT and 42Q significantly improve global supply chain visibility, real time production control and operating efficiency.

Making more than 200 million top level assemblies for hundreds of customers in 2016, Sanmina reconfigures production lines daily and manages a large number of engineering and scheduling changes each week. Over a period of 20 years, Sanmina developed an advanced on-premise MES to manage its factories and meet customer demands for agility and quality. Five years ago, Sanmina recognized the potential of a true cloud MES solution, and its impact on real time global supply chain and factory management. With 42Q, Sanmina Corporation has a system that synchronizes their production, warehouse and quality processes for over 50 factories and a global multi-tiered supply chain. The system creates a virtual representation, or “digital twin” of their operations, providing unmatched real-time visibility into all aspects of its business.

For example, in hundreds of production lines around the world, WIP (work in process), production rates and yields are monitored by 42Q in real-time. Real-time text alerts are sent to production staff automatically when key business indicators fall below a programmed threshold. For some production lines, raw material levels are continuously monitored by 42Q, and guided vehicles deliver components from automated warehouses to replenish workstations. Alerts are automatically sent to production staff to be at that workstation when the guided vehicle arrives.

“Leveraging 42Q’s cloud-based MES platform to connect automated production lines, supply chain systems, and the plant floor has led to dramatic improvements in our business operations. Teams now make decisions more quickly, based upon real-time data,” said Manesh Patel, CIO, Sanmina Corporation. “With more than 25,000 devices connected around the world, our manufacturing teams are automatically notified of any production parameters running below target. Quality personnel have confidence in production lines that use forced routings and components that are scanned and verified. 42Q can also verify the electronic training records for production staff when they badge scan or log into their workstation.”

After their conversion to 42Q, there were many unanticipated benefits:

– Plants self deployed MES with no support from I.T. or 42Q
– Because of this, 42Q was rapidly adopted and its use expanded rapidly
– Manufacturing engineering management got an easy to deploy “backbone” for “instant IOT” and automation initiatives

42Q delivers a comprehensive and proven cloud-based MES solution which operates between an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and the manufacturing equipment in a factory, enabling simpler and more cost effective implementation of a smart factory and Industry 4.0. With robust and proven functionality, 42Q helps manufacturers more easily cross traditional boundaries of automation, engineering, operations and IT. Currently deployed in more than 50 factories worldwide, 42Q’s proven, scalable solution allows organizations to eliminate the lengthy infrastructure acquisition and configuration process, and deploy the solution for immediate benefit.
